Spring 'Postcode Belter' 2009

Despite being a cold and windy start to British Summertime, Sunday 29th March will be a day that many residents of the IV2 7
postcode will never forget, thanks to the Spring ‘Postcode Belter’.

Over 1,000 local residents turned out for the party held at Balloch Primary School and two lucky players were left speechless with huge Street Prizes of £199,670. There were 283 winners in all, sharing a massive £1,108,000.

A party to remember

The ‘Postcode Belter’ kicked off at 2pm in true Scottish fashion, with a piper welcoming all partygoers through the gates. Despite the cold, hundreds of excited residents were soon gathered around the stage waiting to see if Angus was going to bring them good news in the form of a prize cheque!

Angus certainly didn’t disappoint on this front – he was soon up on stage with the promise of prizes for all sector winners and, after music from the Four Souls, he was handing out cheques to audience members.

Almost 200 sector winners walked away with a prize of £1,564 and within just a few minutes, the audience was a sea of people happily waving cheques for this amount.

But the Sector Prizes didn’t stop there – this was just the amount for people playing with one ticket! Players playing since January with two tickets left with £3,128 and, thanks to playing with 5 tickets, one lucky player scooped a huge £7,820.

Life-changing Street Prizes

Despite their significant size, it soon became apparent that the Sector Prizes were really just a warm-up for some truly life-changing Street Prize amounts.

The crowd fell into hushed anticipation as Angus revealed the final two letters of the postcode which had struck it rich. For four people in the crowd the trip out in the cold was made extra worthwhile as IV2 7RA was declared the winning Street Prize postcode.

Cecilia Burnside was astounded when Angus revealed her cheque for £99,835. “I can’t believe it!” she said as the amount sunk in. “This is really going to make a big difference to my life.”

Police Officer John Mcinnes was celebrating alongside Cecilia as he also received a cheque for £99,835. It didn’t take him long to work out that he would use the funds to pay off his mortgage with enough left over for a new car!

And the grand prize goes to…

Finally, the largest prizes were revealed to two players in IV2 7RA who had two tickets. Myra Smith and Audrey Barr were understandably shellshocked after receiving such a huge amount but couldn’t contain their delight when the news sunk in.

Ronald, Myra’s husband, said: “This is a complete bolt from the blue. I’ve never won anything before. It really hasn’t sunk in yet and probably won’t do for a while.”

Audrey was equally as astounded by the amount that she had won. “When I saw my friend Cecilia pull out her cheque for £99,835, I thought it’d be fabulous if I won that much. I pulled my cheque out and saw the ‘99’ so thought it was that – but it kept on going and the ‘1’ came out as well! This is just unbelievable.”

Wrapping up a truly enriching afternoon for residents of IV2 7, Angus said: “Our biggest ever ‘Postcode Belter’ has been amazing. Ever since we announced we were coming to the Highlands the atmosphere has been electric!

“Times are hard at the moment for many Scots so it has been great to see so many happy faces here today in beautiful Inverness. Everyone here has been absolutely brilliant and I’d like to say thanks to the locals who have helped us this week – we couldn’t put on such a fantastic Belter without you all.”

As smiling face after smiling face left the primary school playing field, it was clear to see that 29th March would be a day to remember and celebrate for many Inverness residents in years to come. It’s another area’s turn to celebrate in just a few months time when the Summer ‘Postcode Belter’ time – will it be your postcode that receives a life-changing amount?
