G73 1AA - Rutherglen - 6 December 2009 - Winter 'Big Postcode Rollover'
Rutherglen today pulled the biggest of Christmas crackers as the 'Big Postcode Rollover' sprinkled the most magical of festive cheer across the G73 1 postcode sector courtesy of Scotland's own charity lottery.
Festive spirit was present by the sack-full this Sunday, as Rutherglen residents flocked to the Big Postcode Rollover party, breath bated to discover how much they'd won in the People's Postcode Lottery's biggest ever prize pot of £1.998 million.
The event was held at Stonelaw High School, with chart topping entertainment and recession-busting cheques the order of the day. Not only was the crowd entertained by dancers, a visit from Santa but hit maker Chipmunk, as promised, "blew the crowds away", while revellers were treated to complimentary soup and hot drinks to keep the cold at bay.
Angus said: "What a wonderful boost just in time for Christmas. Rutherglen will be looking forward to an extremely prosperous New Year! The Big Postcode Rollover has been our largest prize pot ever and today has been simply fantastic. A huge thank you to everyone in Rutherglen who have helped us along our way. We couldn't have done it without you!"
There may have been a chill in the air but for winning residents the winter months will be looking decidedly sunny. Over 50 euphoric players from the winning postcode shared a total prize pot of nearly £2 million. Winners picked up a minimum of almost £6,000 meaning they will all definitely be having a happy Christmas this year.
A trio of neighbours living in the full winning postcode of G73 1AA were especially jubilant, having won a staggering £204,509 each! Heather Patterson, Helen Weir and Janet Mcalaney of lucky Farme Castle Court were completely flabbergasted at the news and couldn't hide their delight as presenters Angus Purden and Judie McCourt handed over their bumper cheques.
55-year-old Heather, a practice manager at Rutherglen Health Centre, said: "I've played from the very beginning and started to wonder how everyone else in the crowd had a cheque and I hadn't. I'd thought I'd win about £20 and I was flabbergasted to find I'd won so much more! I'd never won anything like this in my life."
Second winner Helen Weir was at the event with her daughter, who was beside herself with excitement at the prospect of seeing Chipmunk live. On finding out she’d pocketed over £200,000 the mum could only splutter: "That feels fantastic!"
Asked what she’d spend the money on overwhelmed Helen promised to “Enjoy Christmas as much as possible- anything else will be a bonus!"
