People’s Postcode Lottery Charity FAQ

The People's Postcode Lottery is the lottery for charities in Great Britain. We are a society lottery and our mission is to raise funds for charities and to increase awareness for their work by organising lotteries.

Launched in 2005, PPL represents a unique fundraising concept where players play with their postcode to win cash prizes whilst supporting local Great British charities.

1. Which charities are recipients?
Our charity partners are Children North East, Northumberland Wildlife Trust, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust. In February 2009 Daisy Chain and Missing People became additional charity partners in England, followed by People's Postcode Trust England and Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres later in the year. All money raised in England stays in England.

In Scotland our founding charity partners - CHILDREN 1ST, Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres and Scottish Wildlife Trust - have each received over £1 million in support thanks to our players. In 2009 the People’s Postcode Trust also became a People’s Postcode Lottery beneficiary, and it too has received over £1 million for its work with community projects and small charities. Missing People (in Scotland) is our final charity partner, and began receiving support from People’s Postcode Lottery in February 2009. All money raised in Scotland stays in Scotland.

In Wales we support two charities with the ambition to support more as we grow in Wales. These charities are Missing People and Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres.

2. How much has been donated directly to charities?
At the time of writing, over £9 Million has been raised for UK charities.

3. What percentage of revenue goes direct to charity?
40p from each ticket sold goes to charities. That is the equivalent of 20% of all revenue.

4. How much do you expect to give in the future?
It is our ambition for the future is to increase our support by:
• Increasing the percentage of revenue we can donate to charity from ticket revenue
• Increase the number of subscribers
• Increase the number of charities supported by the People’s Postcode Lottery

5. How do charities apply to the Postcode Lottery?
We are not currently accepting applications from new charities with a view to becoming beneficiaries of the Postcode Lottery. However, the People’s Postcode Trust aims to help community groups and charities with grants of between £500-£10,000 on a quarterly basis. Find out more at http://www.postcodetrust.org.uk

6. What kind of charities do you support?
We support charities active in the fields of health, nature, children’s rights and missing people.

7. What is the selection process?
All of the charities have been selected in a three-step process based on pre-selection by a team of consultants, recommendation by the board and approval by the supervisory board.

The most important thing is that the charities we choose can guarantee that all of the money donated in that regeon will stay in that regeon.

Before a British charity organisation is allowed to receive money from a lottery, it must have a ‘Lottery Promoter License’ and all of our charities have these in place.

8. How do you measure the effectiveness of the support?
Our protocol is to hold annual reviews with our charities to audit how our support is utilised and the impact we’re having on each charity.

9. On an international scale what is your charitable impact?
On an International scale, our founding company Novamedia has raised over 3.8 Billion Euros for charitable organisations across the globe. For more information, please visit www.novamedia.nl.
